Thai Chinese Dishes – Kanom Jin or khanom Jeen (Thai Curry Laksa)

Kanom Jin or Khanom Jee is one of my favourite curry noodle dishes in Thailand. Kanom jin is rice noodles cooked with one of several kinds of curry and the flavour is quite similar to Singapore Curry Laksa. The authentic Singapore laksa is served in a spicy coconut curry soup with fresh cockles sprinkle with finely chopped Vietnamese coriander or pak pai (Polygonum odoratum). The coconut milk is used to enrich the curry. The rice noodle orginated from the Chinese are made from rice flour, water and salt.

What is interesting about the dish? The dish is served with different types of curry and it varies from one province to another, but ingredients can include chicken, crab, fish and other types of meat. It can be extremely spicy. I had tasted the most spicy Kanom Jin in Buriram province and it almost blew my head off. The dish is usually eaten with cucumber, bean sprouts, sweet basil and long bean as a side dish.

Kanom Jin is widely known in Thailand. So far, I have yet to come across a Khanom Jin vendor in the street of Bangkok except for travel trade show. I was told Kanom Jin is served as breakfast in Phuket province and I am looking forward to it.
