Besides home to a stunning array of endemic flora and fauna, Koh Kham has abundant coral reefs and and today, there are 38,000 square meters of coral reefs on the beach front. Thanks to the efforts of the Royal Thai Navy to protect and conserve the marine environment. The island was declared a marine national park in 1993. Besides managing the sea turtle conservation project, the navy has created artifical reef units using PVC pipes, aimed to bring marine diversity back to the area. It takes really long time for such a great area of coral reefs to develop and the average growing rate of these corals is around 1 to 10 centimeters per year.
